Borussia Dortmund Triumphs Over Mamelodi Sundowns in Club World Cup
Cincinnati – Borussia Dortmund kicked off their match with a straightforward goal, overcoming a spirited challenge from Mamelodi Sundowns on a sweltering day, ultimately winning 4-3 in the Club World Cup group stage on Saturday.
The crowd of 14,006 at TQL Stadium felt the heat, with temperatures nearing 90 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius), prompting a cooling break as per the referee’s discretion.
Mamelodi struck first, opening the scoring with a remarkable play by Lucas Ribeiro Costa in the 11th minute. However, the equalizer came quickly for Dortmund in the 16th minute, when Sundowns’ goalkeeper Ronwen Williams inadvertently collided with Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha, allowing Nmecha to score easily.
Dortmund seized control of the match, extending their lead to 3-1 by halftime. Serhou Guirassy found the net in the 34th minute, followed by Jobe Bellingham in the 45th minute.
An own goal by Chryso Mudau, trying to deflect Daniel Svenson’s cross, made the score 4-1 in the 59th minute, as Mamelodi began ramping up the pressure on the German side.

Mamelodi Sundowns rallied, scoring twice in quick succession, first with Iqraam Rayners hitting the post and then scoring on his follow-up, followed by a goal from Levo Moshiva in the 90th minute. However, it wasn’t enough to erase their earlier mistakes.
With this victory, Dortmund sits at the top of Group H, moving past Mamelodi as they prepare for an upcoming match against Fluminense on Wednesday, while also set to face Ulsan on the same day.
