Personal Experience with Starting Social Security Benefits
In late March, I made the decision to start my Social Security benefits. My husband had retired from his job at the VA, and after chatting with a financial planner, we figured it was best to get started as soon as we could. I went online, completed the ID.ME verification, and took about 45 minutes to fill out the application on the Social Security website. To my surprise, the entire process took less than an hour. Then, on April 3rd, I received a payment from Social Security, referred to as “One Payment.” I expected to receive a check for the previous month, and it came through right on time. Since then, I’ve gotten two more payments, both arriving two days earlier than I thought they would, probably because I opted for direct deposit. So, so far, everything has gone smoothly.
At the beginning of June, I walked my husband through his own application process. One challenge we faced was that he already had an ID.me account, which made it tricky for him to set up a new one. That was a bit frustrating, but we managed to sort it out with an online application. He received his first direct deposit on the 16th, and the processing time was quick. Again, everything seems to be going well.
Overall, there haven’t been any issues with our Social Security benefits. Our checks arrive as scheduled, or even a bit earlier, just as detailed on the Social Security website. I think the processing time has been pretty fast. The information on their site seemed current, although I’m not sure if they will adjust things as they record interest. I’ll keep an eye on that.
Luckily, we haven’t had to reach out to Social Security, and everything has gone smoothly. I can imagine that those dealing with problems might be quite frustrated, especially with the ongoing changes, but my own experience has been positive.
I’m sharing this to reassure anyone thinking about applying for benefits that the system still seems to be functioning well. Despite all the horror stories circulating about Social Security and the issues people encounter, I was concerned that if we waited too long to apply, we might miss out on our benefits. It’s possible that may come true for some, but I want people to know that what was promised is still available, and the process isn’t complicated. So, for now, if you need your Social Security, go ahead and take that step.
