Republican Senators Criticize Sanctuary Cities

A Republican senator expressed frustration with liberal sanctuary cities, highlighting Los Angeles as a prime example of where federal immigration laws are not being upheld. “It’s enough,” stated Sen. Katie Britt from Alabama. “We don’t understand why we continue to give federal funds to places that disregard federal law. It seems pretty straightforward.”

In a conversation within the Senate office building, Britt remarked on the significant issue over the past four years: “There have been millions of illegal immigrants crossing our borders.” She contended that sanctuary cities message to residents is alarming. “They essentially say, ‘You can commit crimes, ignore the law, and we won’t report you to federal authorities.’ That’s just insane, and we’re not going to support it any longer.”

On a related note, the mayor of Nashville has voiced support for ICE agents, despite claims that such backing puts his actions at risk.

Sen. Bernie Moreno from Ohio noted, “We’ve enabled such bad behavior for years. No one is above the law. When local leaders don’t adhere to federal regulations, it’s entirely unacceptable.” He stressed that this is a concern for all Republicans and should remain a priority.

Similarly, Sen. Rick Scott from Florida asserted that cities that block immigration efforts should not receive federal funding. “If you’re a sanctuary city, you’re not doing right by your residents. It’s frustrating because we lack a functioning immigration system. Many just want to come here legally, work, and eventually return home,” he said.

On the opposing side, Sen. Tim Kaine from Virginia downplayed the issue, claiming it isn’t a concern in his state, where sanctuary city officials do not collaborate with federal authorities. Sen. Angus King from Maine chose not to engage, stating, “I’m focusing on other matters right now.”

Meanwhile, Sen. Bill Cassidy mentioned that communities rejecting federal government directives must face potential repercussions but didn’t elaborate further.

Sen. Roger Marshall from Tennessee also criticized sanctuary policies, saying they hinder ICE operations. “Local officials shouldn’t block ICE agents from performing their duties,” he said. “If that means cutting funding, so be it. We made a promise to protect the Constitution and ensure safety for all.”
