Bill Clinton supports his former chief aide Cuomo for mayor of New York City

On Sunday, former President Bill Clinton backed Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral primary, calling the city a “crisis” and endorsing Cuomo as a “competent leader.” In a robocall released by Cuomo’s campaign, Clinton urged New Yorkers to vote for the former governor during Tuesday’s Democratic showdown.

Clinton stated, “The election recommends that New York City be voted for Andrew Cuomo,” highlighting his previous connection to Cuomo, whom he appointed as his secretary for housing and urban development.

At 78, Clinton, who resides in Westchester County, emphasized Cuomo’s experience in addressing issues such as affordable housing and combating hatred. He expressed confidence in Cuomo’s ability to address what he described as a “crisis” in New York City.

“New York City is facing a major challenge,” Clinton said, pointing out the urgent need for affordable housing and the high levels of homelessness. He insisted on the importance of electing mayors who possess the necessary skills and experience for such challenges.

Clinton characterized Cuomo as a dedicated leader who knows how to navigate government effectively. “When our fundamental rights are being attacked, I know he will stand up and protect the people of this city,” he added, describing Cuomo’s potential to elevate “progressive standards.”

Cuomo, 67, expressed gratitude for Clinton’s support, referring to the former president as a personal leader, friend, and hero. He commented, “His administration was one of the most accomplished in modern political history.”

Having resigned as governor in 2021 amid several allegations, Cuomo seeks to revive his political career with this mayoral bid despite facing serious challenges. The scandals surrounding him and Clinton reflect a tumultuous journey for both men.

Clinton’s endorsement arrives just two days ahead of the primary. Notably, the influential South Carolina Rep. Jim Clyburn also supported Cuomo recently, amidst mixed reactions to the campaign of socialist opponent Zohran Mamdani.

Recent polling indicates a tight race, with Cuomo currently leading Mamdani 55% to 45% in the seventh round of ranked-choice voting. This represents a drop in support since earlier in May when Cuomo held a more significant lead.
