The essential element for every marriage

A Harvard professor has shared a critical insight for sustaining a lifelong marriage.

According to him, friendship is essential. Superficial factors like looks, financial status, and chemistry can fade, but a solid friendship can endure. “The aim isn’t passion; it’s friendship. You need to be close, ideally your best friend,” Brooks mentioned during a podcast.

He emphasized, “One of the most crucial aspects of a happy life is having a partner by your side until the very end.”

Brooks also pointed out various early signs indicating a marriage might be in trouble, with loneliness topping the list. He remarked, “One of the strongest indicators of impending divorce is when partners feel lonely while living together, suggesting that their only bond might be their child.”

He noted how couples often focus entirely on their children, leaving them feeling lost once the kids are grown and out of the house. The relationship can become empty if it was built solely around parenting responsibilities.

“Once that shared focus weakens, you might find yourselves sitting at dinner, barely communicating,” he cautioned.

Brooks believes couples should engage in deeper conversations, nurturing a shared philosophical interest beyond mundane topics like daily chores or childcare. “If those discussions dwindle, loneliness can really creep in,” he added.

Moreover, maintaining connections outside the marriage is also vital. “It’s healthy and beneficial for several reasons,” he noted. It’s not just about managing a home; even having separate spaces, like bathrooms, can ease tension.

For instance, a woman named Debbie Wiener encountered friction in her marriage due to bathroom sharing. She ultimately opted for a “bathroom divorce,” explaining, “As we age, our needs change—my husband’s habits weren’t fitting anymore.” She effectively resolved the issue by creating two separate bathroom suites, much to the envy of her neighbors.
