DHS alerts about possible terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S. after airstrikes on Iran

Homeland Security’s Alert Amid Iran Conflict

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently issued a warning regarding the potential activation of terrorist sleeper cells in the U.S. This caution comes in light of an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities by the United States.

On Sunday, the National Terrorism Advisory System released a bulletin urging Americans to remain vigilant. It emphasized that the ongoing conflict with Iran is contributing to an increased threat level within the country.

The bulletin outlined concerns about pro-Iranian hackers possibly targeting U.S. networks. There’s also worry that Iranian leadership might issue a religious edict inciting violence within the United States.

“The probability of violent extremists within the country independently resorting to violence could rise significantly if Iranian officials call for retaliatory actions against targets in the Homeland. Recent attacks have often stemmed from anti-Semitic or anti-Israel sentiments, and the current Israel-Iran situation might lead to further plotting of attacks by individuals based in the U.S.,” the bulletin read.

“Since the onset of this conflict, various foreign terrorist organizations — such as HAMAS, Lebanese Hizballah, and others — have made statements encouraging violence against U.S. interests and personnel in the Middle East due to Israel’s military actions. This atmosphere could also fuel hate crimes against perceived Jewish or pro-Israel targets within the country,” it continued.

This warning was issued shortly after the New York Police Department announced increased deployment and resources to religious, cultural, and diplomatic locations throughout New York City, collaborating with federal partners for safety measures.

“We’re monitoring the situation in Iran closely. Out of an abundance of caution, we’re enhancing our resources at religious and diplomatic sites in NYC and working with federal partners. We’re dedicated to observing any potential effects on our city,” stated the NYPD.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem made a statement on Sunday, underscoring the importance of keeping the nation safe, especially in turbulent times.

“The ongoing Israel-Iran conflict raises the possibility of threats at home, including cyberattacks, violent acts, and antisemitic crimes,” Noem noted.

This alert directly follows the U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear facilities that occurred on Saturday, utilizing a potentially groundbreaking weapon for the first time, as explained by Joint Chiefs Chairman Air Force Gen. Dan Caine.

The current heightened alert level is expected to last until September 22, 2025.
