Travis Hunter Signs Rookie Contract with Jaguars
After some deliberation, the Jacksonville Jaguars have finalized a rookie contract with Travis Hunter, who was the second overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. It’s kind of a big deal, not just because of his draft position, but also due to the unique nature of the announcement and the financial details involved.
Interestingly, the Jaguars made the announcement twice. One time they referred to Hunter as a defensive back, while in another, they identified him as a wide receiver. This really underscores their intention to utilize his dual-threat capability, which is quite impressive.
The contract is substantial—worth a total of $46.65 million, fully guaranteed over the next four years. What’s more, Hunter will receive a $30.57 million signing bonus upfront. He’s the first non-quarterback to have negotiated the entire signing bonus at the beginning of the contract, which is noteworthy.
While Hunter has secured his agreement, there were some rumors floating around regarding other first-round picks, like Shemar Stewart from the Cincinnati Bengals. Some believed Hunter might face delays before he actually signed. But that seems to have been put to rest with his completed contract.
As the Jaguars prepare for the upcoming season, rookie training camp kicks off on July 19. Hunter will be expected to show his versatility on the field—from playing both sides to fitting into the offensive scheme. New GM James Gladstone seems very optimistic about the impact Hunter could have, especially after the Jaguars missed the playoffs for the past two seasons, leading to significant changes in the organization. Coach Liam Cohen, who previously led the Buccaneers’ offense, is now tasked with getting Trevor Lawrence and the rest of the team back on track.
Hunter is anticipated to make a significant impact during the 2025-26 NFL season. However, it remains to be seen how exactly he will be integrated into both the offense and defense. Some fans are looking forward to seeing him paired with Brian Thomas Jr., who had a standout rookie year.
