US embassy in Qatar advises Americans to stay indoors

The U.S. embassy in Qatar advised American citizens to evacuate until further notice as of Monday morning, following an attack connected to Iran during the weekend. The embassy described this recommendation as being “from a wealth of caution,” but didn’t elaborate further. Interestingly, Qatar hosts the Al Udeid Air Base, which has around 10,000 U.S. troops stationed there.

This advisory comes in the wake of a warning issued by the State Department to American citizens on Sunday. They noted that there could be demonstrations impacting U.S. citizens abroad, urging them to stay vigilant.

After U.S. B-2 bombers targeted three nuclear sites in Iran with bunker buster bombs, Iran pledged retaliation. They stated, “In addition to punishing its descendants, we must acknowledge that Islamic fighters have the freedom to act against U.S. interests.”

The spokesperson for Qatar’s foreign affairs commented that recommendations from foreign embassies do not indicate a specific threat. They emphasized the country’s security is stable and that relevant authorities are monitoring the situation closely to ensure safety for citizens, residents, and visitors.

Qatar finds itself in a tricky position, balancing relations with both Iran and Western nations. Approximately 40,000 U.S. troops are reported to be located within the Middle East.

While Iran is expected to respond to the recent bombings, Israeli strikes have compromised Iran’s missile capabilities, significantly reducing their stock of medium-range missiles. On the other hand, the U.S. is experiencing a “threatening environment” at home, facing “low-level cyberattacks on U.S. networks by Iranian hacktivists,” which indicates that cyber actors linked to Iran might be planning further attacks on U.S. infrastructure.
