The unusual situation of DeWanna Bonner as an All-Star avoiding Caitlin Clark and the Fever

Dewanna Bonner’s Status with Fever Raises Questions

Dewanna Bonner’s situation with the Indiana Fever has turned into quite an enigma. The 37-year-old, a six-time All-Star, joined the Fever in the offseason and was expected to provide veteran leadership alongside rising talents like Caitlyn Clark, Aliya Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell.

Yet, after participating in just nine games, Bonner’s future is shrouded in uncertainty. She has been absent from the last four games for “personal reasons.” According to director Stephanie White, the lack of clarity is notable, especially as reports suggest that her banner has been taken down at Gainbridge Field House, adding to the intrigue.

“She’s fine, she’s fine,” White mentioned recently. “Again, there’s no timeline. I think it’s day to day, and we need to continue to support DB during this time.”

Bonner, who ranks as the third-largest scorer in WNBA history, last played on June 10. In recent seasons, her role with the Fever has noticeably diminished.

The Auburn product is averaging only 21.3 minutes on the court each game, a steep decline from the 31.8 minutes she played last year with the Sun. This reduction has reflected in her statistics, with her current averages standing at 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds, whereas she recorded 15.0 points and 6.0 rebounds the previous season.

Her unexpected absence, along with the removal of her banner, has sparked speculation among fans regarding a potential trade, or if she might have requested one. One user even asked, “Will the Fever officially trade her?” while another suggested she might be reconsidering her season with the team.

Meanwhile, some fans are urging others to refrain from jumping to conclusions about her absence. “You have too much time on your hands,” one user commented in response to the theories regarding her situation. “Maybe she’s sick. Maybe her family is sick? Maybe she’s pregnant. The list is endless. I really hope she’s okay.”
