UN Secretary-General Praises Trump’s Ceasefire Announcement
On Tuesday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed rare commendation for President Donald Trump following his declaration of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran. This comes just days after Guterres criticized the US’s military actions in Iran.
Guterres welcomed Trump’s ceasefire statement, urging both nations to adhere to it. “The fight must cease,” he emphasized, noting the ongoing suffering of people in both countries. He also expressed hope that this ceasefire might inspire resolutions in other regional conflicts.
Recent Tensions and Warning
Earlier, after a US strike on Iran’s nuclear site, Guterres characterized these actions as alarming, warning that they represented a “dangerous turnaround” that could lead to further destruction. A day prior, he voiced significant concerns over the potential escalation of the conflict, highlighting the risks to civilians and broader implications.
Ceasefire Announced Amid Discontent
Trump declared the ceasefire just 48 hours after Guterres’ warning, referring to what he labeled a “12-day war.” However, on Tuesday, the president appeared frustrated with both Israel and Iran. He indicated his dissatisfaction, especially after Israel promised retaliation upon claims that Iran had violated the ceasefire, a claim Tehran denied.
Ultimately, Trump stated that Israel would refrain from attacking Iran, noting that their aircraft would return home. He reiterated his stance against Iran acquiring nuclear weapons, asserting that they would not be allowed to rebuild their nuclear facilities. Interestingly, he also mentioned that both countries seemed eager to bring the conflict to an end.
