Host Erin Burnett Discusses 'Friendliness' Toward Iranians Who Chant 'Death To America'

CNN Host Remarks on Iranians and Anti-American Sentiments

CNN’s Erin Burnett mentioned on Tuesday that Iranians who express “death to America” sentiments possess a certain “interestingness.” While reporting from Iran, she noted that those chanting were surprisingly eager to engage with her and other Americans. Despite their hostile slogans against the U.S., Burnett characterized the interactions as friendly.

She recalled a previous report by Dana Bash in Tehran, where, even amidst chants of “death to America,” individuals spoke openly with her. It’s somewhat perplexing but, perhaps, reflective of the complexities of their feelings.

For several years, anti-American slogans have been common in Iran and other parts of the Middle East, particularly during significant events like the anniversary of the 1979 U.S. embassy takeover, which saw thousands gather in November 2023. Protesters burned U.S. and Israeli flags and displayed messages condemning the U.S. as the “great Satan.”

In light of these sentiments, Israeli officials have urged U.S. involvement against Iran. Trump reported a “very successful attack” on Iranian nuclear sites, insisting that Iran should seek peace to prevent further conflicts. In retaliation, Iran launched significant missile strikes on American bases in Iraq and Qatar.

After Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Iran, tensions flared again when Iran fired missiles at Israel. The president remarked that both nations appear to be uncertain in their actions.

Iran’s government has been criticized for its severe treatment of citizens and for enforcing strict laws, particularly regarding women’s rights and attire. Since 1979, women have faced potential fines, imprisonment, or corporal punishment for not adhering to hijab laws.

The death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in 2022, following an altercation with the morality police over these laws, ignited widespread protests, during which hundreds were reportedly killed and thousands arrested, including journalists.

Moreover, Iranian law provides exemptions for male relatives who harm or kill women under claims of family honor and criminalizes marital rape, creating daunting legal barriers for victims. Women alleging non-marital rape face an arduous path to justice, often requiring testimony from multiple male witnesses or the perpetrator’s confession.
