President Prohens Unveils Major Investment Plan for Balearic Islands

On Tuesday, President Marga Prohens revealed a €3.8 billion plan aimed at “transforming the Balearic Islands.”

During her presentation of the “Isle of Change” initiative, Prohens detailed various sectors targeted for investment, including healthcare, education, social care, water infrastructure, and housing, as well as efforts to enhance mobility, promote tourism sustainability, and improve security.

“After two years in government, we now have a comprehensive vision for infrastructure investment,” Prohens stated. She emphasized that significant investments that have been neglected in the region for the past two decades will finally take place. “What we see is a transformation of the Balearic Islands,” she added.

The President highlighted the necessity of implementing this plan to address urgent needs and significantly boost the quality of life for the island’s residents through improved public infrastructure.

Investment details include initiatives already underway in housing, healthcare, and sustainability. “These issues can’t be resolved overnight; they require a strong, ambitious foundation and a clear long-term plan,” she remarked.

In terms of education, €600 million has been allocated, which includes plans for 77 new schools. The healthcare sector will receive €450 million by 2028, focusing on expanding facilities like the new hospital in Felanitx and improvements to Manacor hospitals. Additionally, 14 new nursing homes are planned, along with €137 million aimed at providing social rental housing through Ibabi in the upcoming years.

Discussing mobility, Prohens mentioned two railway projects, valued at €1.4 billion, in progress for routes to Llucmajor and Alcuzia. She is also negotiating new railway contracts with the Spanish government for additional projects.

Investments in water infrastructure total €713 million, which includes the construction of three new desalination plants. For sustainable tourism, €284 million is earmarked for projects like the redevelopment of Major Plaza in Palma and conservation efforts in Menorca. Additionally, €24 million will go towards security and emergency response improvements.
