FIFA Investigates Racial Abuse Allegations
FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee has initiated a lawsuit against Pachuca’s Gustavo Cabral following claims of racial abuse directed at Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger during a match in the FIFA Club World Cup. This group stage encounter took place on Sunday.
In a statement released on Tuesday evening, FIFA noted that the lawsuit is the result of reviewing the match report. This indicates that they take the allegations seriously.
For now, Cabral is permitted to participate in Club World Cup matches involving Mexican clubs while the investigation is ongoing. Pachuca is scheduled to face Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal in their next match on Thursday.
During the match, Rudiger alerted referee Ramon Abatti to the alleged abuse after Real Madrid secured a 3-1 victory. The officials displayed a crossed-arm gesture as a response to the accusations.
The incident unfolded toward the end of the match when Rudiger and Cabral were involved in a clash in the Pachuca penalty area. Rudiger was seen on the ground, visibly distressed.
A verbal exchange followed, and Abatti eventually allowed both players to cool down, but Rudiger returned to speak with the referee afterward.
After the match, Cabral refuted the accusations, stating it was simply a “fight” with some “clashes” between the players. He mentioned, “He said I hit him, and then there was a discussion and the referee signaled racism,” adding that in Argentina, the term “Cagon de Mierda” is often used in confrontations.
Real Madrid’s coach, Xabi Alonso, commented post-match that FIFA had already begun its investigation and expressed confidence in Rudiger’s claims. “We believe in him, and that’s not acceptable,” he stated, reinforcing the seriousness of the situation.
