Benfica defeats Bayern Munich in a heated Group C finale at the FIFA Club World Cup

CLUB WORLD CUP: BENFICA TOPS GROUP C WITH WIN OVER BAYERN MUNICH

In Charlotte, North Carolina, Benfica’s Andreas Schjelderup struck early, finding the net in the 13th minute and leading his team to a 1-0 win against Bayern Munich. This victory placed Benfica at the top of Group C in the Club World Cup.

The result means Bayern Munich falls to second in the group, while Boca Juniors faced elimination.

The match unfolded in sweltering conditions, with temperatures reaching 97 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius).

“It’s a crucial win for us. We had a solid performance, especially in the first half,” remarked Nedim Bajrami from Benfica. “Things got a bit tougher in the second half, but we managed to hold on.”

Benfica’s winger, Gianluca Prestianni, had to exit the game early due to heat-related issues just after the 55-minute mark after which medical staff attended to him for about 25 minutes.

Schjelderup’s goal came from a cross delivered by Fredrik Aursnes, sending a right-foot shot from just inside the penalty area.

In a moment of controversy, Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich found the back of the net in the 61st minute, but the goal was disallowed since Harry Kane was deemed offside, obstructing the view of goalkeeper Anatoly Trubin.

Meanwhile, Bayern faced their first defeat of the tournament, struggling to find their rhythm as they head into the knockout stage later this week.

“Our opponents were tough to deal with,” noted Bayern’s Thomas Müller. “When your goalkeeper becomes the standout performer, it means you didn’t execute everything perfectly.”
