Whit Merrifield Announces Retirement After MLB Career
Whit Merrifield, a 36-year-old veteran of nine MLB seasons and a three-time All-Star, has decided to retire from baseball.
The announcement came from his agency, Warner Sports Management, on Tuesday, following a season where he didn’t sign with any team for 2025.
“I think it’s important for everyone to know that I chose to retire, and once that became clear, it was an easy decision,” Merrifield mentioned in his statement. “There were many factors involved in my decision, but the biggest one was the six-pound gift sent by God through my wife. I felt truly blessed in March 2024.”
Merrifield is often recognized for his time with the Kansas City Royals, where he played for six and a half seasons, earning two of his three All-Star selections there.
“KC, you became my second home, my family,” he reflected. “Nothing can compare to that first love.”
Notably, he earned the title of the Royals’ “Iron Man,” having played all 162 games in two separate seasons and a minimum of 145 games in two other seasons. He also participated in every game during the shortened 2020 season.
Throughout his tenure with the Royals, he led MLB in multiple categories, including hits and stolen bases.
Midway through the 2022 season, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays.
“Playing in Toronto, across the country, was an unforgettable honor,” he remarked.
Merrifield made his last All-Star Game appearance in 2023 while with the Blue Jays.
In his final season, he played for both the Phillies and Braves, with batting averages of .199 and .248, respectively.
“Philly, I felt a bit more affection for you than you showed me. Apologies for that. It was a joy to play for my childhood team, Atlanta, and finish my career there,” he said.
Reflecting on his achievements, Merrifield expressed pride in what he had accomplished.
“I’m proud of myself. I didn’t think others outside my circle could understand the toughness I developed and the achievements I reached. Much of my energy went into proving people wrong, but true joy came from proving my supporters right,” he added.
