Updates on contract discussions for Islanders' Noah Dobson

Islander GM Comments on Dobson’s Contract Negotiations

General manager Mathieu Dersch has clarified that he is not looking to trade Noah Dobson amid ongoing contract discussions, which have sparked some speculation about the defender’s future.

As a restricted free agent since July 1, Dobson’s situation remains delicate. During a Tuesday Zoom call, Dersch mentioned that his focus is on signing all the restricted free agents at the club.

“I’ve been in discussions with agents, and it’s really just part of the process,” Dersch noted when asked about Dobson. “It often takes time, but sometimes things can move quickly. We have four RFAs to negotiate with, and it’s been an emotional process. We’re navigating through it.”

Alongside Dobson, Alexander Romanoff, Simon Holmstrom, and Max Tseplakov are also awaiting decisions regarding their free agency. However, Dobson has been the focal point of attention lately, especially after a report claimed negotiations had started at $11 million a year.

While this assertion hasn’t been confirmed, it’s evident that Dobson is seeking a significant contract. Yet, there’s uncertainty about whether the two parties can agree on a figure that satisfies both sides.

Dobson’s potential move, particularly given his arbitration rights, might not be the most favorable scenario for the Islanders. However, as the draft and free agency approach, Dersch mentioned that teams seem interested in the 25-year-old defender.

“Cell phones are definitely buzzing during draft week,” Dersch remarked. “There’s a lot going on. Teams are trying to manage their budgets and explore various options, so communication is constant. That’s just how draft week usually goes.”

Dersch also confirmed the roles of newly appointed assistant coach Ray Bennett and Bob Buffner. He provided insight on their responsibilities, noting that Bennett had overseen the power play and Buffner coached the defense and probably handled penalty kills.

New assistant general manager Ryan Bowunds continues his scouting duties as well, focusing on player representation.

Dersch commented positively on Bowunds, saying, “He was fantastic. I’ve built a good working relationship with him over the years. He’s someone who fits well with our team.”

Additionally, the Islanders have announced a six-game preseason schedule, which includes matchups against the Flyers, Devils, and a home-and-home series with the Rangers.

The preseason will kick off against the Flyers on September 21, with two more home games scheduled against the Devils on September 26 and the Rangers on September 29. The final preseason game will take place in Philadelphia on October 2.
