Ford’s New Work Policy: Four Days In-Office

Ford Motor Company is bringing most of its payroll employees back to the office for four days each week, part of their recent efforts aimed at enhancing both employee and company performance.

A spokesperson mentioned that a significant number of employees were already working in the office for more than three days per week. They believe that daily face-to-face interactions will help Ford in its shift towards becoming a more dynamic and profitable company.

The updated policy will impact a large part of the global payroll workforce, though the exact numbers weren’t disclosed. Employees were informed about the changes on Wednesday, with the new policy starting on September 1.

Since the pandemic began in 2020, many businesses globally have been trying to balance flexibility for workers. Companies like JPMorgan and Amazon, for example, have mandated that hybrid workers return five days a week.

Ford’s competitor General Motors faced criticism after demanding a three-day office return in late 2022, which they later retracted before the policy took effect in 2023.

Automakers in Detroit are trying to attract executives from Silicon Valley, who tend to prefer a more flexible work environment. To add urgency, Ford has introduced stricter bonuses and attendance policies as they compete against electric vehicle companies like Tesla.

Earlier this year, Ford cut stock bonuses for many mid-level managers. Meanwhile, GM had revamped its employee performance ranking system to create pressure for improvement or risk being let go.
