Awareness Campaign for Transgender Men’s Health
A social media post from Planned Parenthood’s Southern New England affiliate drew attention after it encouraged transgender men—biologically female—to seek cervical cancer screenings during Men’s Health Month.
The Facebook post stated, “It’s Men’s Health Month, which means highlighting all men’s health needs. Trans men are male and need screening for cervical cancer.” This is a notable point since cervical cancer screenings are usually recommended for adult women every three years.
The cervix, a part of the female reproductive system that connects the uterus to the vagina, is where these screenings focus.
In the same post, Planned Parenthood provided tips for making these exams more comfortable for trans men. The post featured an image of a transgender individual with mastectomy scars.
This campaign sparked a significant reaction online, garnering over 70,000 responses on Facebook alone. Although comments were disabled, approximately 63,000 users reacted with “laugh” emojis to the post.
While Planned Parenthood did not respond to inquiries from Fox News Digital, discussions around this topic have emerged. Some critics questioned the need for cervical cancer screenings, positing, “If trans men are male, then why screen for cervical cancer, a condition typically associated with women?”
A report from a conservative watchdog group has claimed that Planned Parenthood misinterprets contraception definitions to administer transgender hormone therapies to minors, sidestepping parental consent.
According to this report, using pills labeled for birth control as “gender-affirming” treatment may pose serious legal and ethical concerns, especially since minors in many states can consent to these treatments without notifying their parents.
Planned Parenthood has pushed back against such claims, asserting they do not violate any laws. Jenny Black, the CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest, expressed that misinformation about essential gender-affirming healthcare is harmful.
It’s noted that Planned Parenthood received roughly $800 million in government funding within a year. Following changes in administration, federal funds were withheld from various affiliates due to alleged violations of executive orders concerning diversity and inclusion programs.
