John Smoltz to Compete in American Century Championship
John Smoltz is set to participate in the American Century Championship at the Edgewood Tahoe Golf Club in Nevada next month, defending his title as the champion.
Recently, Smoltz shared with Fox News Digital that he has “no excuses” this time around and intends to aim for victory. He has been involved in this tournament for over a decade, highlighting his physical readiness with two new hips. He jokingly noted that he can keep pace with younger competitors, although he feels he’s losing yardage.
“At 58, I’m still in the game,” he said. “I can’t let up, especially in crucial strokes.” Smoltz acknowledged that he’s seen success in previous tournaments, finishing within the top ranks multiple times, but emphasized the need to score birdies consistently to win.
The annual tournament has become a staple for Smoltz and other athletes and celebrities, who look forward to this gathering each year. “This time of the year is significant for connecting different personalities,” he remarked, appreciating the chance to mingle with others at Lake Tahoe.
Smoltz, a former Major League Baseball player who won the World Series with the Atlanta Braves, contrasted the nerves of golf with his baseball experiences. He expressed that the pressure in golf can be more intense, given the individual nature of the sport. “You can find ways to win in team sports despite mistakes, but golf is a different animal,” he noted.
The American Century Championship is scheduled to take place from July 9 to July 13, promoting not only sportsmanship but also camaraderie among diverse participants.
