The Washington Post Attempts a Bold Move with Unusual New Feature

Washington Post Tests New Commentary Feature

The Washington Post plans to trial a feature that will allow sources to add their comments to articles after they’ve been published, as shared by executive editor Matt Murray in a letter to staff that has been circulated to other media outlets. The feature, titled “From the Source,” will let main sources contribute additional information tied to the article, according to a report by Max Tani.

Murray indicated in the letter that the Post will evaluate any extra commentary before granting final approval for inclusion. Initially, this feature will only be tested on climate-related articles before broader implementation.

“From the Source” is part of the publication’s ongoing efforts to enhance how journalism is presented and engaged with, alongside other initiatives like Ask the Post AI and Flexible Access. These efforts are aimed at encouraging current and potential readers to invest time in the platform while fostering trust with the Washington Post.

This move comes amid significant changes within U.S. capital newspapers. The Washington Post reportedly incurred a $100 million loss in 2024, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Jeff Bezos, the owner of the publication, appears to be steering towards creating new digital tools with a focus on artificial intelligence in 2025. It was mentioned that the Post conducted a substantial buyout of its entire video and copy team in May, with the New York Times highlighting a shift towards producing more “personality-driven” YouTube content. This acquisition marks the end of a tumultuous year for the publication, during which Bezos expressed frustration over hiring two white men to succeed former executive editor Sally Buzby.
