Brian Stelter Works to Mitigate Fallout for CNN After Trump Administration Disputed Leaked Information

CNN’s Response to Bombing Report Controversy

On Thursday, CNN’s chief media analyst Brian Stelter attempted to mitigate the network’s reputational hit by asserting that they never claimed the recent U.S. bombing in Iran was a “failure.” This statement follows revelations from CNN’s Natasha Bertrand, who obtained leaked information from a preliminary report by the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), which suggested that the bombing was merely a temporary measure.

During “The Situation Room,” Stelter clarified that CNN did not present this information as definitive, emphasizing its preliminary nature. He acknowledged the issue’s complexity, particularly in light of President Trump’s simplifications during a recent address. “It’s vital to understand that CNN did not label this mission as a failure; in fact, it might have been very successful,” he remarked.

Interestingly, in the initial reporting of the DIA’s findings, CNN did not mention terms like “low confidence” or “preliminary.” Those qualifiers only appeared after an update to the report the following Wednesday. Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth criticized the press, labeling it the “best kept secret report.” CNN included Hegseth’s statement in later coverage.

Bertrand noted that CNN seemed to lend credibility to the information without clearly stating that it was “unreliable.” Both the DIA and the CIA, along with the Iranian government, contested the leaked information, branding it “unreliable” and inconsistent with findings reported by CNN. A senior DIA official confirmed the initial assessments were indeed “preliminary” and expressed “low confidence” in their validity.

President Trump and Hegseth have asserted that the bombing effectively eliminated Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Trump criticized CNN and MSNBC, labeling them as “gutless losers” for downplaying the operation’s success.

On Wednesday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt announced that the FBI was investigating the source of the early assessments. CNN defended Bertrand’s reporting, arguing it was not unreasonable for journalists to accurately report the assessment’s existence.
