Trump SBA starts review of all government contracts given out in the past decade

Audit Ordered by SBA Amid Bribery Scandal

In light of a significant bribery scandal tied to USAID, the Small Business Administration (SBA) has launched a comprehensive audit of all government contractors who received grants through the agency’s business development program over the last 15 years.

A letter revealed that SBA administrator Kelly Loeffler described the extent of the USAID fraud as indicative of “systematic obstacles in surveillance and accountability.” She expressed concern that this was not merely an isolated situation.

In response, Loeffler has instructed Tre Pennie, who oversees government contracts at the SBA, to take decisive action against any similar potential abuses within the agency.

She emphasized the urgency of beginning a full audit of agency awards dating back to 2010.

Interestingly, a Senator has accused top Trump officials of contributing to “the deaths of hungry thousands of children.” It seems there’s a lot of turmoil surrounding this issue.

“The role of a federal contract officer is not just a routine job; it carries immense authority and fiduciary responsibility,” Loeffler pointed out. She insists that the contracting process must prioritize transparency and merit over personal interests.

These developments follow significant reductions in USAID operations aimed at minimizing waste and fraud during the Trump and Musk administrations, which met with widespread protests from Democrats who argued such cutbacks would deepen poverty and suffering for beneficiaries globally.

Amid claims of the agency’s effectiveness, allegations have surfaced regarding Roderick Watson, an influential USAID contractor, who reportedly ran a long-term bribery scheme dating back to 2013.

Watson has pleaded guilty to civil servant bribery, as announced by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The DOJ claims Watson was involved in a bribery scheme that included cash, tech gifts, and extravagant perks, amounting to over $1 million.

Vistant, a company in a joint venture awarded a sizable contract in November 2023, was recently excluded from government contracts due to a lack of integrity, according to USAID announcements. This followed protests from the joint venture regarding their exclusion.

Loeffler remarked that the USAID scandal illustrates a failure in protections intended to secure taxpayer dollars and ensure equitable access to contracts for small businesses.

She criticized the Biden administration for awarding a substantial contract to a company previously flagged for integrity issues.

“The systemic failings here suggest a breakdown in the environment that should promote internal controls,” she declared.

Furthermore, Loeffler assured that the SBA will no longer tolerate abuse that costs taxpayers and small businesses. The agency’s audit will initially focus on high-profile contracts and will be reported to the US Office of Inspectors and the DOJ.

Any individuals or companies found violating ethical standards will be reported to appropriate authorities, and the SBA aims to recover misappropriated funds.

Loeffler concluded, “We’re determined to protect public trust while tackling misconduct directly.”
