Nico Harrison is Optimistic After Challenging Times

Nico Harrison has faced a tough few months, but he’s starting to see a glimmer of hope.

The Mavericks’ general manager made a surprising move by trading away their star player, Luka Doncic, earlier this year. Yet, in Wednesday’s NBA Draft, he secured a high-profile pick in Cooper Flag, who was selected first overall.

This trade rattled Dallas fans, leading some to express their dissatisfaction vocally. Chants of “Fire Nico” echoed through the American Airlines Center after the deal.

Yet, there seems to be a shift in Harrison’s fortunes following the draft lottery win. With Flag joining the team, a rising star from Duke, the mood could change.

Harrison expressed hope that the negative sentiment from fans might subside with this new addition. “That’s what I want,” he remarked when asked about the potential for easing criticism. “Maybe I’m assuming a bit.”

However, during the Mavericks’ draft party, those “Fire Nico” chants resurfaced. It appears that the ongoing negativity might only vanish if the team starts winning.

Flag, alongside players like Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson, could help shoulder the responsibilities left by Doncic’s departure. Flag averaged 19.2 points and 7.5 rebounds in college and has the potential to be a superstar when healthy.

In other developments, the Mavericks re-signed veteran point guard Kyrie Irving for three years at $119 million, although he missed a significant portion of the last season due to injury.

Looking ahead, Harrison acknowledges the pressure for a strong start, especially with the absence of Doncic. “I think we’re winning right now,” he said. “We’ll win in the future. In the end, it’ll be Cooper’s team. That’s not the case during this transition. So I believe we’ll keep moving forward.”
