Hochstein Discusses Iran’s Nuclear Program on CNN
During an appearance on CNN’s “Source” on Thursday, Amos Hochstein, who previously held the position of special presidential coordinator for energy security under the Biden administration, commented on the significance of recent strikes by Israel and the U.S. regarding Iran’s nuclear program. He pointed out that these events have heightened the nuclear issue’s importance over the past two years.
Hochstein remarked on past aggressions, stating, “Last year, there were missile attacks on Israel from Iran. Israel encountered a barrage of 100 ballistic missiles along with about 200 drones.” He noted that the U.S. military played a role in countering these threats successfully. As a result, he indicated that Iran has lost key deterrents: geographical distance, ineffective missile capabilities due to U.S. defenses, and a probable retreat of their nuclear ambitions.
He went on to clarify that terms like “eliminated” or “destroyed” are largely political and suggested that the public should regard them with skepticism. According to Hochstein, the projection of a six-month timeline could actually extend to 18 months or even two years concerning the nuclear program. Allies, including Israel and European nations, are aware of this situation.
Hochstein also emphasized the continuing need for negotiations with Iran and suggested that there should be a restructuring of the program along with a call for inspections.
