DeSantis Offers Unique Tour and Discusses Immigration Facility Plans
On Friday, Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis provided a “Crocodile Alcatraz” tour for Steve Doocy, co-host of “Fox and Friends.”
Earlier in the week, the Trump administration approved a facility aimed at deporting illegal immigrants, spurred by a proposal from Florida Republican Attorney General James Usmieire. DeSantis told Doocy that the new Department of Homeland Security facilities are “secure enough to handle it.”
“When it comes to deporting illegal aliens, there’s a procedure the DHS must follow, including veterinary care and staging them for removal. And, well, we recognize that local sheriffs and police are involved. Sure, there’s an ICE operation, but it’s not sufficient. So we’re taking action to streamline the deportation process. This facility will help us manage over 3,000 individuals,” DeSantis emphasized.
President Trump has made multiple executive moves to tackle illegal immigration and enhance border security, including designating Mexican drug cartels and certain gangs as foreign terrorist organizations.
DeSantis elaborated, “This effort is managed by our emergency management department. During a hurricane, we prepare for that response. We have protocols in place, and when crews must restore power, we set up areas for them. This isn’t our first time dealing with such challenges.”
He also highlighted the difficulties detainees would face in escaping the facility. “If criminal aliens attempt to flee, where can they go? Crossing swamps for 50 or 60 miles to reach civilization? It’s pretty tough,” he claimed. “We’re shifting this deportation responsibility away from local law enforcement. This won’t impact Florida residents too much, although there may be some effects in more densely populated areas.”
