'60 Minutes' team requests CBS News to appoint Tanya Simon as executive producer

Correspondents from “60 Minutes” are pushing CBS News to appoint Tanya Simon, who has been serving as interim executive producer, as the permanent leader of the show. This request comes in the form of a letter signed by all seven current correspondents, including familiar names like Leslie Stahl and Anderson Cooper.

Simon, daughter of the late correspondent Bill Simon, joined “60 Minutes” as an associate producer in 1999 and has built a solid reputation over the years. Staff members view her as a natural fit to succeed Bill Owens, who resigned in April. One insider mentioned, “If it wasn’t her, there would be a rebellion.” However, despite this strong internal support, the process seems to have stalled as management hasn’t been responsive. It’s uncertain if CBS News president Tom Chibrowski has the necessary authority to make such decisions independently.

Ultimately, the decision may rest with Shari Redstone, the chairman of Paramount. Current tensions around the Israeli-Gaza conflict and the coverage of Donald Trump have created additional complications for the parent company. Redstone has reportedly expressed reluctance to promote individuals closely tied to existing editorial teams, casting further uncertainty on Simon’s future.

Amidst these dynamics, insiders worry about the impact of the ongoing merger with Skydance Media and whether new leadership might reshape “60 Minutes” significantly. Some speculate that David Ellison, who leads Skydance, has been looking to infuse new ideas into CBS News, potentially aligning with voices like former New York Times editor Bari Weiss, known for her critical stance towards traditional media.

If Simon is ultimately appointed, it might encourage veteran correspondents like Stahl and Pelley to remain. But if the new leadership looks to outsiders for the role, it could lead to their departure from the program.

Discussions regarding the appointment are ongoing, and CBS News, Redstone, Ellison, and Weiss have reportedly been contacted for comments on the situation.
