Otani Shines in Dodgers Victory Over Rockies
In a thrilling game on Thursday at Coors Field, Los Angeles Dodgers’ star Shohei Otani hit his 28th home run of the season, contributing to a 3-1 win against the Colorado Rockies. This achievement makes him the first player to reach 28 home runs in the first 80 games of a season since Willie Mays did so back in 1954.
Otani’s solo shot, which launched 418 feet into the Dodgers’ bullpen, came in the seventh inning, putting the Dodgers ahead 2-1. It was a key moment, especially considering the context—he faced Rockies reliever Tyler Kinley with two outs and a runner on base.
The three-time MVP continues to impress this season, boasting a batting average of .291 along with 52 RBIs and 11 stolen bases across 80 games. His performance has positioned him alongside New York Yankees’ Aaron Judge, both tied for second in the league with 28 home runs, while Calloway from the Seattle Mariners leads with 32.
But it’s not just his bat that’s notable; Otani has also resumed pitching for the Dodgers. It’s quite remarkable, really, considering he had elbow surgery in August 2023. It’s been a bit of a juggling act for the team; they clearly recognize how valuable his hitting is, even as he works to build his pitch count.
Interestingly, Otani’s last pitching appearance was on June 22 against the Washington Nationals, where he pitched a scoreless inning after facing the San Diego Padres earlier in the month, where he also managed to get a hit.
Looking ahead, he is slated to pitch against the Kansas City Royals this Saturday at 4:10 PM ET. The Dodgers, currently holding a record of 51-31, will kick off a three-game series against the Royals at Dodger Stadium starting Friday night.
