Abrego Garcia's Top Attorneys Secure Extended Jail Stay to Prevent Deportation

An attorney representing Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a well-known illegal immigrant from El Salvador, convinced the judge to keep him incarcerated in federal prison.

In court, the attorney argued that if the Department of Justice released him, the Department of Homeland Security would deport him right away.

On June 27, lawyers from Hecker Fink LLP submitted a petition requesting a delay in the release order until a hearing on July 16 regarding the government’s motion for revocation. They aimed to provide more clarity on the situation.

During an emergency session with Judge Sinis in Maryland, the government revealed plans to detain Abrego and send him to a “third country” immediately after his release from pretrial custody. This is noteworthy because it marks a departure from the usual practice of deporting him directly to El Salvador post-trial.

Later that afternoon, the federal judge decided to keep Abrego Garcia in prison for a bit longer. A subsequent hearing would confirm the details of his eventual release.

Just a week prior, a judge in Tennessee had stated he would release a number of migrants from custody.

On Friday, the Justice Ministry informed the judge:

The government had previously warned the court that if released, the defendant could be deported. This information wasn’t new to the defense or the court, considering the defendant’s deportability status dates back to 2019.

The government’s decision to bring Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador seems driven by pressure from judicial authorities and political factors.

Meanwhile, his elite-funded lawyers have expressed frustration over the new criminal charges against him:

In an ideal situation, the goal wouldn’t be to extend his detention any further. However, the government has claimed that Abrego has returned to the U.S. to confront “American justice,” yet there seems to be little intention to proceed with an actual trial. Instead, it feels more like he is being subjected to a trial by public opinion, especially given the serious claims against him that lack concrete evidence.

Despite his serious allegations, several Democrats continue to rally around illegal immigrants. Accusations against Abrego suggest a violent background, tied to gang activity and worker trafficking over the years.

This issue may not play well for the Democrats: a recent Harvard/Harris poll indicates that 62% of registered voters suspect he is likely connected to the MS-13 gang.

Democrats and their supportive media largely overlook the ongoing legal struggles, focusing instead on the broader implications beyond Abrego Garcia’s potential deportation.
