Cooper Flagg is in an unusual position, and it seems to be a fortunate one for him.
Typically, first-round draft picks are expected to step into a prominent role right away, especially in situations where teams are looking to bounce back strong, but Flagg won’t necessarily bear that weight with the Dallas Mavericks, who have seasoned stars like Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving by their side.
“Many players in this position don’t get such an opportunity, so I feel really blessed and grateful,” Flagg mentioned at a recent press conference. “I just want to absorb everything, learn from those who have been around longer, and draw from their experiences.”
Dallas is refreshing after reaching the 2024 NBA Finals, led by Luka Doncic, but they’ve also ended up in the lottery draft this year due to the fallout from a significant Doncic trade, along with injuries to Davis and Irving.
With only a slim chance of landing the top pick—just 1.8%—it was surprising when the Mavericks indeed picked Flagg.
Even without a playoff spot this season, the team still has a core that can set the groundwork for future success, largely maintaining the roster that competed in the 2024 Finals, aside from Doncic.
Irving isn’t expected to return from his ACL injury until later in the season. Meanwhile, with Davis and possibly adding veteran Clay Thompson during the offseason, the Mavericks should have enough stability to help Flagg develop without overwhelming him right out of the gate.
“They possess such valuable knowledge,” Flagg said regarding his veteran teammates. “Their experiences will be crucial for my growth.”
While he might not take the lead role immediately, Flagg seems poised to eventually carry the flame that Doncic inherited from Dirk Nowitzki.
“I’m focusing on learning and improving every day,” Flagg shared. “If I reach my full potential, then perhaps the pressures and expectations from others—towards both me and the team—will fall into place.”
“So, I’m just committed to being my best and striving to win at the highest level.”
