A Washington Post reporter, Thomas Fam Regro, aged 48, was arrested on Thursday after a search at his home in D.C. led to charges of child pornography possession linked to his work laptop. He appeared in U.S. District Court on Friday.
The FBI’s action resulted in the seizure of various electronic devices. Reports indicate that Regro’s laptop contained a folder with 11 videos showing child sexual abuse material. During the search, investigators also discovered what seemed to be a piece of a broken hard drive near the area where Regro’s laptop was located.
A spokesperson for The Washington Post mentioned on Friday that the publication is taking the allegations seriously and that employees are currently on leave. Regro was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team in 2018 while working at the newspaper, where he managed video journalism teams and held an assistant director position.
The case is being examined under the Justice Department’s Project Safe Childhood Initiative and is actively investigated by the FBI’s Child Exploitation and Trafficking Task Force. The FBI acknowledged the cooperation from local police as the investigation unfolds.
