New York City singles call off dates due to concerns about Zohran Mamdani

Dating in New York City has taken a turn for the complicated.

People are now hesitating to connect over their opinions regarding socialist Zoran Mamdani, especially after his recent victory in the Democratic mayoral primary, which many are calling a “political earthquake.”

A conversation that quickly went viral showcased how politics can intervene before a first date even begins.

In the exchange, a woman reached out a few hours prior to their planned meeting to clarify their political alignments: “Did you vote for mayor Zoran? I’m really excited that he won.”

The man, known online as Murray Hill Guy, didn’t respond verbally.

Instead, he simply shared a screenshot of a canceled dinner reservation and posted it online, where it caught the attention of 30,000 followers on X.

The restaurant, Little Rebel, had open tables if anyone still needed a last-minute romantic spot.

It didn’t stop there.

After noticing the online buzz around their conversation, the woman texted him, “I hate your page. If I don’t delete the post, I’ll go to the police. I can’t deal with this right now.”

In response, Murray Hill Guy quipped, “Good luck!” and added a sarcastic comment about not voting to refund the police.

He later mentioned that the conversation was definitely a deal-breaker for him.

“If someone brings up their left-leaning stance before meeting, that’s a relationship killer,” he remarked.

He suggested that maybe, had the topic come up naturally during their date, he could have reacted more reasonably.

Reflecting on past interactions, he recalled a similar situation after a November election where a girl on a dating app asked him who he voted for, but he chose not to reply. “This was the first time I actually set up a date, and then this happened,” he said, highlighting the unexpected turns dating can take nowadays.
