Meta’s AI Ambitions Gain Momentum with Key OpenAI Hires

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta has brought on three notable researchers from OpenAI to enhance its ambitions in developing advanced AI. Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai, who previously played vital roles in establishing OpenAI’s Zurich office last year, are now part of Meta’s team. This strategic move is aimed at firmly positioning the company in the fast-evolving AI sector.

The trio has a strong background, having collaborated at Google DeepMind before their tenure at OpenAI. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed their departure. This recruitment emphasizes Zuckerberg’s commitment to attracting top-tier talent, with indications that he offered $100 million to these researchers for joining a new team focused on surpassing human intelligence.

Beyer acknowledged their new roles at Meta through a post on X, although he dismissed the $100 million bonus claim as “fake news.”

Furthermore, Meta’s AI strategy was bolstered with a $14 billion investment in AI startups and hiring CEO Alexandr Wang for its new Superintelligence team. Reports suggest Zuckerberg also attempted to lure OpenAI co-founders Ilya Sutskever and John Schulman, who have yet to accept his advances.

Despite the notable exits, OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman remains unaffected by Zuckerberg’s recruitment strategies. At a recent event, Altman remarked on Zuckerberg’s innovative approach, saying, “It’s like OK, Zuckerberg is doing something new and insane. What’s next?” He assured that his key personnel have chosen to stay with OpenAI.

Zuckerberg’s hands-on approach in Meta’s recruitment efforts began in April, especially following the launch of their latest AI model. In May, however, Meta decided to postpone the release of even larger versions of the model. Some researchers had turned down Zuckerberg’s offers, prompting OpenAI to increase incentives for its current staff.
