Sonny Gray of the Cardinals achieves a 'Maddux' in impressive showing against the Guardians

Sonny Gray’s Dominant Performance Leads Cardinals to Victory

In a remarkable display of pitching, St. Louis Cardinals’ starter Sonny Gray led his team to a 5-0 win against the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field on Friday. Gray, 35, delivered a masterful performance, completing nine innings without allowing a run, and he achieved all this on just 89 pitches.

This outing marked the first time since 2021 that a pitcher had thrown a complete game shutout in under 90 pitches. The last pitcher to achieve a similar feat was New York Yankees’ Suce Ace McFried, who did so back in 2017 while playing against the Baltimore Orioles.

Gray, who has now thrown seven complete games in his 13-year career, mentioned after the game, “I did that early in my career, but it’s been a while. I don’t know if you can do it, especially the type of game, especially if you can go with me.”

He faced 28 batters, landing strikes on the first pitch 19 times and retiring 15 batters in under three pitches, which was quite impressive. The Cardinals pitcher, who didn’t exceed 12 pitches in an inning, showcased his skill by quickly overwhelming the Guardians’ lineup.

As the game progressed, Gray seemed to settle in, feeling like it was just another inning as he stepped onto the mound for the ninth. “I knew the innings were moving a bit. I knew it was perfect for that long,” he reflected. “So, I was fine with that.”

The Cardinals, currently at 45-38, are looking to build on this performance, gearing up to face the Guardians (40-40) again in the second game of their three-game series on Saturday at 4:10 PM ET.
