Concerns Over Public Safety in NYC Leadership
Experts and veteran officials have voiced serious concerns regarding public safety in New York City under the leadership of socialist Zohran Mamdani. They report two major issues: rising crime and significant departures from the NYPD, according to a recent article in The New York Post.
Despite a late campaign turnaround, Mamdani maintains he will not “refund the police” or lessen police presence. Critics argue that this shift appears to be politically motivated to appeal to undecided voters.
Muslim Socialist Zohran Mamdani’s NYC plan:
- Refund the police
- Release all criminals from prison
- Stop prosecuting crimes
- Revoke citizen protection laws
How would someone vote for this?
Scott Munroe of the NYPD Detective Foundation Association expressed anxiety about the future. “The city will not be completely safe… I’m worried every time my phone rings,” he said.
“With leaders like him, our officers will be at risk, and recruitment will suffer,” Munroe added, highlighting concerns about police morale and safety.
There are fears among NYPD leaders that if Mayor Eric Adams or GOP candidate Curtis Swawa do not intervene, a wave of resignations could follow. One veteran officer declared, “If he wins, I’ll quit.” It seems implausible for New Yorkers to support Mamdani, given the current climate.
A 20-year NYPD veteran criticized Mamdani’s views on the department, arguing, “This guy believes the entire NYPD is racist. I think it has become more diverse than ever.” He described Mamdani as uninformed about the realities of the force.
Mamdani’s vision includes creating a new community safety division and transitioning 911 responses towards mental health and crisis intervention, rather than police engagement. Swawa commented that Mamdani’s approach confuses police work with social services, stating, “Cops need to be able to do their jobs—protect us and apprehend criminals.”
According to current Commissioner Jessica Tish, major crime rates have dropped by 2%, 2%, and 8% since 2019. A detective remarked on the hypocrisy of accepting police protection while criticizing the NYPD, questioning, “How can you want a police officer to protect you but not support the people of New York City?”
Democratic consultant Hank Schenkopf criticized the mayor’s promises as contradictory, noting, “His supporters claim he’ll refund the police… that’s what he represents.”
