Historic Buildings in Shanghai Moved by Robots
Shanghai is witnessing an incredible engineering achievement. Recently, historic buildings in the city have been relocated using robots, and the world is taking notice. One impressive example is the Huayang complex, a Sikumen-style structure weighing about 7,500 metric tons and covering 43,400 square feet. This relocation is a significant departure from traditional methods.
This ambitious endeavor involves 432 small robots that will carefully transport the building approximately 33 feet each day. The operation is aimed at making way for new underground developments. It’s fascinating to think about how technology is reshaping urban landscapes while still considering heritage preservation.
Why Robots for Relocation?
The Huayanli Complex consists of three brick buildings constructed in the 1920s and 1930s, located in Shanghai’s historic Zhangyuan area. This style of architecture blends Western and Chinese influences, and the district itself is over 140 years old, showcasing some of the best-preserved examples of Sikumen buildings.
However, the move is more than just a spectacle. The city plans to create a three-story underground hub beneath the complex. This facility will offer over 570,000 square feet of commercial space, a parking garage, and a transportation center linking three major metro lines. By preserving the Huayanli complex above ground, Shanghai is striking a balance between respecting its past and moving towards modern infrastructure.
Challenges of Relocation
Moving such a substantial structure isn’t straightforward. The dense alleyways and historic confines of the Zhangyuan district add to the complexity. Traditional methods simply can’t be applied here, and any mistakes could irreparably damage these historical buildings. For instance, the construction in the 1920s included a “large hall” that played a vital role in the community.
How It Works
Engineers are using these 432 small walking robots instead of cranes or bulldozers. These robots gently lift and reposition the building, advancing slowly to ensure precision. Achieving this level of accuracy is not simple; the project uses several advanced technologies. For example, specially designed drilling robots create new foundations without causing damage as they navigate narrow passageways.
Additionally, Earth-moving robots are equipped with AI to differentiate between obstacles, ensuring the workflow remains efficient. Engineers create detailed 3D blueprints using building information modeling and point cloud scanning, which helps plan the movements and avoid obstacles effectively. The soil excavation is handled using conveyor belts, further enhancing efficiency.
Once the various underground constructions are complete, the Huayanli complex will be meticulously restored to its original site, keeping its historical essence intact while incorporating modern amenities.
