‘We Might Recover’: Scott Bessent Cautions Nations About Tariff Deadline

Trade Negotiations Update

Treasury Secretary Scott Becent addressed trade partners on Monday, emphasizing the need for cooperation in ongoing trade negotiations and the potential reinstatement of tariffs that President Donald Trump imposed on April 2.

On April 9, Trump announced a 90-day suspension of the tariffs he had levied on several countries, allowing time for negotiations until July 9. During a discussion on Bloomberg, anchor Sonari Basak inquired about how investors and countries should interpret this deadline and whether an extension to the suspension might occur.

“Well, it’s ultimately up to President Trump. I can’t engage with any one country — we’re negotiating in good faith here — but we should remember that if they can’t meet our expectations, they could revert to the April 2 tariff levels,” Becent mentioned, expressing hope that it wouldn’t come to that.

The announcement of these mutual tariffs on April 2 caused significant disruption in international markets, although the market experienced a quick rebound after Trump’s pause.

Additionally, Canada revealed on Sunday that it would retract the Digital Services Tax (DST) affecting American tech companies to facilitate renewed trade discussions with the Trump administration. This announcement followed Trump’s decision on Friday to halt trade negotiations with Canada due to the tax imposition.

Moreover, it’s been reported that the Trump administration has solidified a trade agreement with China, which includes a commitment from Beijing to provide rare earth materials crucial for U.S. manufacturing, as noted by Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

As the July 9 deadline looms, the Trump administration is also working on finalizing ten new trade deals with key partners, Lutnick shared with Bloomberg.
