82-year-old woman passes away due to injuries from Boulder attack

Charges Filed in Boulder Attack Resulting in Fatality

Prosecutors in Colorado announced charges on Monday against a suspect following the death of an 82-year-old woman who was injured in a June 1 incident involving a Molotov cocktail. The victim was identified as Karen Diamond, and the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office stated that she was “tragically killed due to severe injuries sustained in the attack.”

Reacting to the news, Colorado Governor Jared Polis expressed his sorrow, saying, “We are devastated by Karen Diamond’s passing. This loss is deeply felt in the Boulder community and across our state, particularly within our vibrant Jewish community. I extend my heartfelt condolences to her friends and family. It’s just so hard to believe she was taken from us so quickly.”

Federal Hate Crimes Linked to Attack

The suspect, Mohamed Sabri Soliman, a 45-year-old illegal immigrant from Egypt, was charged with 12 federal hate crime counts last week in connection with the attack in downtown Boulder. Allegations suggest he attempted to kill eight people by throwing a Molotov cocktail.

During a court hearing, Soliman’s attorney, David Kraut, entered a plea of not guilty on his behalf. The public defenders representing Soliman have not spoken to the media regarding the case.

Details of the Incident

According to investigators, Soliman aimed to target around 20 participants at a weekly pro-Israel demonstration on Pearl Street, which called for the release of hostages taken by Hamas on October 7, 2023. Interestingly, authorities noted that Soliman mentioned attempting to purchase a firearm but was unable to do so due to his immigration status.

On Monday, court documents indicated that additional charges had been upgraded to include two counts of murder related to Diamond’s death. Moreover, following an ongoing investigation, 66 new charges have been added after identifying more victims.

The Boulder County District Attorney’s Office now reports a total of 29 victims in the attack, with 13 sustaining physical injuries.

Broadening Charges and Community Response

The indictment now includes serious charges: two counts of first-degree murder, 52 counts of attempt to commit murder, and several counts for assault and use of incendiary devices. These adjustments came after discussions with federal and local law enforcement entities.

Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty emphasized the community’s grief, stating, “This horrifying assault has taken the life of an innocent person beloved by her family and friends. Our thoughts are with the Diamond family during this incredibly challenging time.” He also affirmed the commitment to seek justice for all affected by the attack, reinforcing the notion that the community will unite in support of the victims.
