Carlos Alcaraz aids sick fan on Wimbledon's warmest first day

Wimbledon Kicks Off with Record Heat

Wimbledon started on Monday, making headlines for experiencing the hottest first day ever. Temperatures soared to approximately 90 degrees Fahrenheit at the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club.

While athletes’ well-being was a significant concern, two-time men’s singles champion Carlos Alcaraz noted that the crowd also played a part in supporting him through the relentless heat.

During a match that lasted four and a half hours against the 38-year-old Fabio Fognini, play was paused as some fans became unwell from the heat.

Alcaraz stepped in to assist, grabbing a bottle of water and running to the fans in distress, while Wimbledon security provided umbrellas to offer shade.

Reported underground temperatures peaked at 32.2 degrees Celsius (90.1 degrees Fahrenheit) around 4 PM, breaking the previous record of 29.3 degrees Celsius set in 2001.

After defeating Fognini in the second set, the match resumed with Alcaraz leading 2-0. He concluded the final set at 6-1, celebrating amidst what appeared to be a moment of relief.

The match was thought to be a straightforward one for Alcaraz, especially given his recent success in the French Open against Jannik Sinner, yet it turned out to be quite the battle as he notched his career-high 19th consecutive win. Fognini, who plans to retire after this year, proved to be a tougher opponent than anticipated.

While Fognini has never progressed past the third round at Wimbledon, he managed to clinch the second set, raising hopes for an upset after winning 6-2 in the fourth. However, much of Alcaraz’s challenges stemmed from his own errors—he racked up nine double faults and 62 forced errors, but still managed to deliver 52 winning shots. He faced 21 breakpoints, an unexpected strain for the opening day.

Throughout the match, Alcaraz could be seen expressing his frustrations toward his coach, with social media translating his comments in Spanish, implying Fognini believed he still had plenty of tennis left in him.

In the end, Alcaraz fulfilled his responsibility, ensuring that many fans witnessed the beginning of his journey towards a potential third consecutive title.
