US Dollar Index Sees Its Lowest Point Since March 2022

  • The US Dollar Index hit a low of 96.62 on Tuesday, marking its lowest level since March 2022.
  • Uncertainty around future policy decisions in July is expected to challenge the dollar.
  • President Trump has criticized Chairman Jerome Powell for being “too late” regarding interest rate cuts.

The US Dollar Index (DXY), which assesses the dollar’s value against six major currencies, has seen a streak of nine consecutive wins. Trading around 96.70, it reached a fresh low early Tuesday during Asian hours, the lowest since March 2022.

Traders are now focused on upcoming US employment data this week, particularly the June ISM Manufacturing Purchase Managers Index (PMI) data, which is expected to be released in the latter part of Tuesday. These labor market figures are crucial for determining the US Federal Reserve’s policy direction this July.

The US dollar could continue its upward trend amidst rising uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s stance. President Trump has lodged a formal complaint against Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell regarding high interest rates, labeling him as “too late” in implementing potential cuts. The recent uptick in inflation, shown in the Personal Consumption Expenditure Price Index (PCE), suggests pressures building from early tariffs, contributing to increased short-term core inflation.

Market participants are approaching with caution, particularly concerning significant tax and spending proposals currently being debated in the Senate, which might add approximately $3.3 trillion to the national debt. In a post on Truth Social this Monday, Trump remarked on how his administration effectively reduced costs for consumers, asserting that nothing quite compares to these results.
