Ben Shelton’s Tough Path at Wimbledon

Ben Shelton’s playing style is, to say the least, aggressive. It seems tailor-made for the high-stakes environment of Grand Slam tournaments.

The American has entered a total of 11 major events throughout his career, reaching the semifinals once and making it to the quarterfinals three times.

This marks Shelton’s third appearance at Wimbledon, yet he has yet to advance past the fourth round. It’s probably not a complete failure, but it certainly pales in comparison to his performances on hard courts in Australia and during the US Open.

You’d think Shelton’s skills would adapt well to the grass courts of the All England Club, but he has actually struggled on this surface. After all, his record on grass stands at 8 wins and 11 losses, making it his least successful surface in professional tennis.

Entering the first round of Wimbledon this year, Shelton might have wished for a more favorable draw. Instead, he’ll face grass court specialist Alex Bolt, who presents a formidable challenge.

Wimbledon: Shelton vs. Bolt Preview

Bolt, aged 32, is quite the veteran in grass court tennis. He has played 134 professional matches on grass—more than all but a couple of players in this tournament, specifically Novak Djokovic and Dan Evans.

In terms of raw talent, Shelton certainly holds the advantage in this matchup, but Bolt’s extensive experience on grass could mitigate that difference to some extent.

Shelton will aim to serve well against Bolt, but if he struggles, this match might resemble a tumultuous ride, perhaps leaning in favor of the Australian.

Just before Wimbledon, Shelton dropped out of the top ten in world rankings for the first time, but he still boasts more talent than Bolt. However, if it turns into a lengthy battle, the dynamics might shift.

The stakes could be unpredictable if Bolt manages to push Shelton to his limits.

Play: Bolt to win in 5 sets (+850) over 4.5 sets (+275).
