Tragic Fate of Israeli Hostage Misidentified by Hamas
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, reportedly mistook an Israeli man for a pilot, leading to his torture and eventual death. This information was shared during a meeting of the Knesset House Committee by Dani Elgarat, brother of the deceased Itzik Elgarat, who was 68 years old. He revealed that the Director-General of Israeli Intelligence provided details to the family on Sunday.
Itzik was targeted when he was shot while attempting to seek refuge in his safe room during an attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. His body was released by Hamas in February amid a brief ceasefire.
Initially, Itzik was taken captive alongside Edan Alexander, an IDF soldier who was later freed by Hamas. Dani Elgarat explained that Hamas believed the eagle tattoo on Itzik’s arm indicated that he was a pilot. “They brought him in for questioning, but he never made it back,” he shared with lawmakers.
It was reported that Edan Alexander inquired about Itzik’s well-being, but Hamas guards informed him, “He’s gone.” Dani stated, “Itzik died, was murdered, and suffered a heart attack during the torturous interrogation.”
During Itzik’s funeral, Elgarat had claimed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu bore responsibility for his brother’s death, saying, “Today you are placed by the Prime Minister himself to dig a grave for you and rest.”
Subsequently, Elgarat was reportedly removed from the event after criticizing Netanyahu for funding Hamas, which some lawmakers interpreted as inciting provocation.
The attacks have sparked considerable backlash regarding the effectiveness of Israeli security and the broader handling of hostage situations. Families of the victims have expressed dissatisfaction with the diplomatic efforts that have yet to secure a deal for the release of all hostages.
Prime Minister Netanyahu acknowledged the necessity of addressing the Gaza situation, asserting that defeating Hamas is critical for both security and peace.
Former President Trump also reiterated his call for an agreement between Israel and Hamas, noting that negotiations for the retrieval of hostages are currently underway, according to his statements.
