Golf Means Many Things
Golf is a game that holds various meanings for different individuals. For some, it’s a way to get exercise; it’s pretty clear that there’s a physical aspect to it.
There’s also a mental challenge involved. Unlike most sports, golf uniquely positions you against yourself. You’re competing against the reflection in your own mirror, in a sense.
With courses all over the globe, every game can feel different. Each round offers unique sights, sounds, and sensations, making every experience special in its own way.
On a social level, golf builds connections. Whether we’re with loved ones or strangers in our group, the memories created on the course are unforgettable. I can recall both the amazing shots and the not-so-great ones.
I’ve been fortunate enough to visit some incredible golf destinations, and I can tell you that nothing compares to Cliffhangers, the new par-3 course at Big Cedar Golf.
It’s set to open on July 4th, and I have a feeling it will quickly become a favorite.
The second hole of Cliffhangers, called the Cascade, boasts a waterfall that sits between you and the green. You can see golf carts going by; passing through the waterfall just feels… normal. It’s quite literally a cliffhanger, unlike any other.
Something for Everyone
This course is not just about golf; it deeply connects you with nature.
While Cliffhangers officially opens on July 4th, I had the pleasure of playing it in late June, and I think you should do the same.
Big Cedar Golf is well-known among enthusiasts. Paynes Valley is a must-visit, and Buffalo Ridge has just reopened with pristine greens. Ozarks National is a true test for any golfer. It’s a revered spot in the golfing world.
Currently, nothing at Big Cedar Golf compares to the uniqueness of Cliffhangers. It feels like a theme park ride designed for golf. Without any concrete paths, the course invites creativity, offering an array of engaging obstacles—like lakes, waterfalls, and tricky bunkers. One hole even lets you access a bunker from your cart path.
Now, I’m not a golf pro, but I’m pretty content with my game—I generally don’t embarrass myself, though I don’t hold any course records. I think many of us can relate to that feeling.
That said, I found Cliffhangers to be both achievable and incredibly challenging. The layout allowed for impressive shots while also punishing poorly hit ones. No matter your skill level, it makes you feel like you’re on the PGA Tour in a stunning setting. Big Cedar Golf and its Lodge do a fantastic job of ensuring visitors feel immersed in the beauty of the surroundings.
Like any great course, Cliffhangers has its standout features. There are memorable moments and shots that will stick with me.
The “Lion’s Nest” hole is particularly striking. You enter through a cave, and it’s rumored that a mountain lion was spotted during the construction of Paynes Valley. You’re encouraged to proceed with caution. It adds an exciting thrill.
After navigating the cave, you find yourself beneath a waterfall, preparing for your tee shot. Believe me, this place is something else!
Exiting the cave and walking downhill, crossing yet another waterfall, you’ll forget every worry—at least for a moment. The green seems to float above a lower elevation, making the world feel smaller yet larger than life at the same time.
It’s clear that Big Cedar offers a distinct golf experience, and Cliffhangers is no exception. From the moment you set foot on the grounds, the atmosphere transforms, and the exceptional staff makes sure you feel it.
During my afternoon round at Cliffhangers, I also got to enjoy events held at the facility that night. Experiencing a golf game that feels like a ride truly makes it special. Hearing from Johnny and JP Morris about the course’s design only added to the experience; this father-son duo is known for their influential work throughout the Ozarks, and Cliffhangers is their latest pride.
Capturing the essence of this region at sunset is difficult. When you’re there, nothing else seems to matter. It’s just you, golf, nature, and life.
Every part of Cliffhangers offers breathtaking vistas. Those familiar with the Ozarks know its beauty, and I felt that deeply with every step.
To clarify, my journey involved traversing various elevations. You’ll descend significantly, but expect to make your way back up after 18 holes. It’s a unique experience.
If you pay attention on your way back, you’ll be reminded of what you just accomplished as you cross paths with the intriguing features of Big Cedar Golf again. It’s reminiscent of a big drop ride, heading back to where your journey started.
My day at Cliffhangers is one I’ll hold onto forever. It’s a connection of golf and beauty for all skill levels.
This property earns my highest recommendation. You’ll emerge from this experience feeling proud and enriched by the joys found in every patch of grass, the soothing sounds of waterfalls, and the textures of sand in traps.
Go ahead. Enjoy yourself. Prosper.
