Democratic official criticizes Mamdani for not denouncing hate speech

Democrats Call for Clarity on Hate Speech from NYC Mayoral Candidate

Representative Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat from New Jersey, expressed concerns on Tuesday regarding the handling of hate speech by fellow party members. He specifically criticized New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani for his socialist views and for not denouncing the term “globalization of intifadas.”

“I’m honestly perplexed by how some folks seem to be moving past the various ideas he’s presented. I mean, over the weekend, he was asked to address this phrase, and he just wouldn’t condemn it,” Gottheimer shared during an interview with CNN.

Mamdani, who recently won the NYC mayoral primary against Governor Andrew Cuomo, avoided denouncing the term “intifada globalization” during an NBC interview with Kristen Welker.

“Anyone who can’t step up and condemn hate speech is just not acceptable, in my view. We need him to clarify his stance on his policies before we seriously consider him as a potential mayor,” added Gottheimer, who is Jewish.

Calls for Clarity on Controversial Language

During a segment with CNN host John Berman, it was mentioned that Mamdani seems to suggest he’s not entirely responsible for the language he’s used. In the same interview, he expressed hesitance to deliver “police speeches.”

But why, Gottheimer questioned, wouldn’t he take full responsibility for the words being used? Why not acknowledge the ongoing anti-Semitic incidents we’ve seen in places like Washington and Boulder, Colorado? It’s perplexing when he doesn’t call out hate speech.

Some within the Democratic Party argue that hate speech shouldn’t be tolerated in any context, whether it involves Muslims, African-Americans, or any other group.

“I just don’t get the confusion here, and I hope he will clear things up. Democrats really need to lean towards common sense and rationality at this time,” he said.

Criticism from Within the Party

Other Democratic figures, including Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Hakeem Jeffries, have also requested that Mamdani clarify his remarks on phrases that some interpret as inciting violence against Jewish people.

Media personalities have chimed in as well, with podcast host Donnie Germany expressing frustration over Mamdani’s failure to renounce the term “globalize the intifada.”

“I’m really angry that a candidate for mayor wouldn’t take a stand on language that many people find incredibly offensive. When you look at it from a Jewish perspective, it implies violence,” Germany noted. He added that if different communities raise concerns about language they’ve found hurtful, it would likely prompt a response.
