Federal Workforce Cut by Trump Administration

The Trump administration released data on Tuesday revealing a significant reduction in the federal workforce, with promises of more cuts to come as part of an ongoing effort to eliminate government waste.

According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the total number of federal employees as of March 31 stands at 2,289,472, a decrease from 2,313,216 recorded on September 30, 2024.

In a statement, OPM Director Charles Ezell noted, “The American people deserve a government that is lean, efficient, and focuses on core priorities.” He emphasized that this data represents an initial step towards realizing President Trump’s vision for a more accountable federal workforce.

In February, Trump signed an executive order aimed at coordinating efforts across federal agencies to drastically cut staffing levels, a move that has been met with varying reactions.

New data reflected this order, indicating that while there were about 23,000 new hires per month from April 2024 to January 2025, this number plummeted by nearly 70% to just 7,385 per month once the hiring freeze was fully imposed. The agency claims these cuts have saved taxpayers “billions.”

Looking ahead, OPM mentioned that “hundreds of thousands of workers” are expected to leave by October 2025, facilitated by a postponed resignation program. However, it also acknowledged that many employees still on government payrolls are in the process of being dismissed due to disputes involving court orders.

Trump’s strategy to shrink the federal workforce is encountering considerable pushback from Democrats and various legal challenges. Critics argue that these cuts jeopardize essential roles within the government. Trump has previously remarked that it is “dangerous” for a judge to effectively take on the role of the president, highlighting concerns over judicial involvement in administrative decisions.

Last month, OPM outlined new regulations that facilitate the termination of federal employees for serious fraud, amidst the existing legal framework that makes dismissals based solely on fraud, poor performance, or reduced power more challenging. This remains a point of contention, as many federal employees have protections in place that complicate the termination process.
