The FIFA Club World Cup has officially kicked off. Groups A and B have wrapped up their opening matches, while Group C has just started.
Here’s a recap of the opening weekend:
Al Ahly FC vs Inter Miami: 0-0
Inter Miami, led by Leo Messi, faced off against Egyptian club Al Ahly FC to start off the tournament.
What a performance by Oscar Ustali! The goalkeeper made several crucial saves in the first half, keeping the score at bay.
In the 43rd minute, he delivered the defining moment of the match by stopping a penalty from Trézéguet, a forward for Al Ahly and a star of the Egyptian national team.
Ustali racked up an impressive six saves over the first half!
Another key play came when Wessam Abou Ali managed to clear a shot off the line that would have given Inter Miami the lead.
While the match ended without goals, there was no shortage of excitement and standout performances from both teams.
Palmeiras vs FC Porto: 0-0
In the last group A match, both Palmeiras and FC Porto aimed for a win to take the lead in the group.
Claudio Ramos of Porto pulled off a remarkable double save in the first half, and defender Francisco Moura’s line clearance was crucial as well. This “triple save” ultimately earned the team a vital point.
It’s worth noting that Group A’s two matches both ended without goals.
As it stands, all four teams have a point, but there’s plenty still at stake. Which teams will make it to the knockout stage?
PSG vs Atlético Madrid: 4-0
At the iconic Rose Bowl, Paris Saint-Germain took on Atletico Madrid in front of 80,619 fans, looking to control Group B.
The newly crowned UEFA Champions League winners wasted no time, decisively defeating Atletico 4-0. Fabian Lewis and Bicinha scored in the first half, while Senny Mayor and Lee Kang Yin added more in the second half.
An unfortunate moment for Atletico came when Clement Lenglet received his second yellow card and was sent off in the 78th minute.
Luis Enrique’s side seems nearly unbeatable right now and is clearly a favorite for the title.
Botafogo vs Seattle Sounders FC: 2-1
In a crucial match for both teams, the Seattle Sounders hosted Botafogo at Lumenfield, drawing an audience of over 30,000.
Sadly for Seattle, their early mistakes proved costly, as Botafogo scored two goals in the first half through Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus.
Christian Roldan managed to score for Seattle in the second half, but they couldn’t find an equalizer.
In the closing moments, Botafogo formed a stout defense, denying Seattle any chance of a point.
Several attempts, including Rusnák’s shot and Pedro de La Vega’s follow-up, were saved by Botafogo goalkeeper John.
FC Bayern vs Auckland City: 10-0
The tournament’s first goal came from Kingsley Coman in what turned into a showcase of dominance by the Bundesliga champions.
Auckland City, the only amateur team, unfortunately struggled to keep up with the pace of the game.
Jamal Musiala replaced Harry Kane in the 61st minute and quickly made an impact, scoring a hat-trick with goals in the 67th, 73rd, and 84th minutes.
FC Bayern set records for both total goals scored and the largest margin of victory, reinforcing their status as a formidable contender moving forward.
