Coco Gauff’s Surprising Exit from Wimbledon
Just a few weeks ago, Coco Gauff was basking in the glory of her French Open victory. Now, the mood has shifted dramatically.
On Tuesday, the 21-year-old tennis star faced a disappointing first-round exit at the Wimbledon Championships, losing in straight sets to Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, with scores of 7-6 (7-3), 6-1.
Yastremska, who has fluctuated in ranking since reaching No. 21 in early 2020, entered this match at No. 46. Her best achievement in a Grand Slam came in 2024 when she reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open.
Ranked second in the world, Gauff struggled, making 29 unforced errors and nine double faults during the match. In contrast, Yastremska described her performance as feeling “on fire” throughout the day.
Interestingly, Gauff wasn’t alone in her misfortunes on the courts, as her fellow American Jessica Pegula also lost on the same day amid what seemed like chaos for American women at this tournament.
Wimbledon has not been kind to Gauff in recent years; it’s the only Grand Slam where she hasn’t reached at least the semi-finals yet. Unfortunately, she’s faced early exits from the tournament multiple times, including two first-round losses in the past three years.
The switch from clay to grass has proven challenging for many players. In fact, the last woman to win both the French Open and Wimbledon in the same year was Serena Williams, which was nearly a decade ago.
Interestingly, Yastremska set the record for first-round victories at grand slams, with a tally currently at 11-11, whereas Gauff’s record stands at 20-3 at that juncture, including her earlier defeat to Sofia Kenin at Wimbledon last year.
Yastremska’s best run at Wimbledon came in 2016, reaching the junior final, and she made it to the fourth round in 2019.
Amid all this, Yastremska expressed her joy about playing on grass this year. “I love playing on grass. This year it feels like we’re kind of friends,” she quipped. “I hope my journey here continues.”
