US and Argentina Strengthen Military Ties

On July 2, 2025, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses met with Argentine Defense Minister Louis Petri at the Pentagon to discuss military relations between their two countries.

During the meeting, Hegses noted the long-standing relationship between Argentina and the United States, which has lasted over 200 years. He praised Argentina for its commitment to enhancing its defense partnership, specifically mentioning the interest in purchasing F-16 Fighting Falcons and M1126 striker vehicles from the United States.

Interestingly, Hegses also warned that China presents a dual threat—not just to the US, but to Argentina as well. While China is Argentina’s biggest investor and trading partner, there’s concern about how this relationship may affect Argentina’s sovereignty and economic stability.

The situation is complex. China has lent money to Argentina through various initiatives, which some fear could trap the country in a cycle of debt. There are increasingly loud warnings that Argentina may feel pressure to align its policies with Chinese interests, especially to maintain access to loans.

“I think regional peace requires maximum will and persistence, and we can face these shared security challenges together,” Hegses remarked.

Petri, underlining his commitment to international security, referenced a recent US military action against Iran, stating that Trump’s approach has fostered global stability. He emphasized Argentina’s dedication to combating international terrorism.

“Our relationships are at the highest point, and our partnerships continue to grow in all areas of government,” he added, although he noted that they are, fundamentally, “defending.”

The two leaders also delved into historical military collaborations between the US and Argentina. Hegses recalled that during Argentina’s struggle for independence in 1811, the US government provided significant military support by supplying arms. He also highlighted Argentina’s contributions during the Gulf War.

Petri reflected on past military dealings, noting a transfer of 10,000 rifles acquired from the US during Argentina’s campaign in Patagonia in 1879, which was pivotal for their operation.

In a significant agreement, Petri stated, “Argentina is investing in defense again and modernizing its military,” after signing a contract with Hegses for acquiring the 8×8 striker armored vehicle for the Argentine Army.
