Yankees tie for first place with Blue Jays after intense comeback effort falls short

Yankees’ Lead Slips in AL East

Toronto – The Yankees’ grip on the AL East has tightened considerably.

With over three months still left in the season and more than 70 games to play, Aaron Boone’s team has sunk into a slump, transforming what was once a comfortable seven-game lead into a tie with the Blue Jays by late May.

For the first time since April 13, the Yankees find themselves sharing the top spot in the division, having lost their third consecutive game to the Blue Jays.

The match felt almost decided early on as Will Warren struggled with an 8-0 deficit.

Despite that, the Yankees (48-38) staged a near comeback, leveling the score at 9-9 in the eighth inning thanks to a massive two-run homer from Aaron Judge. However, the Blue Jays (48-38) responded quickly, putting themselves in a strong position.

Boone opted for reliever Devin Williams as the game entered the latter part of the eighth inning.

Williams had a rocky start, hitting the first batter and then issuing a walk to George Springer after five pitches.

Springer managed to steal second before the Yankees chose to walk Vladimir Guerrero Jr. intentionally.

After Alejandro Kirk lofted a fly ball to deep center, advancing the runners, Williams then delivered a pitch that Ben Rice couldn’t handle, allowing Springer to score and put the Blue Jays ahead 10-9.

Burger followed up with an RBI single, providing Guerrero with an extra cushion.

Judge’s impressive 440-foot home run in the eighth inning tied the game momentarily.

It’s interesting to note that throughout the series, the Blue Jays strategically walked him, but in this particular instance, they faced him head-on with a 9-7 score.

Nevertheless, the Yankees suffered their 13th loss in the last 19 games.
