George Russell states his 'future' is with Mercedes amid ongoing Max Verstappen speculation

Formula 1 British Grand Prix: Driver Contract Talks

One of the major topics surrounding the Formula 1 British Grand Prix was the contract situation of drivers George Russell from Mercedes and Max Verstappen from Red Bull. At the start of the week, Russell found himself without a contract for the upcoming season, while Red Bull was focused on the Constructors’ Championship standings. There were discussions reported about Verstappen potentially moving to Mercedes.

Russell was among six drivers who participated in an FIA press conference during the British Grand Prix.

During a session on Thursday, the current Mercedes driver expressed that he sees his “future” with Mercedes and is not considering driving for other teams next season.

“I want to stay with Mercedes in the long run. The truth is, Toto has never let me down. He has kept his promises, but he has to make the best choices for his team, which includes me and all the dedicated staff at Mercedes,” Russell stated.

Speculation has indicated that Verstappen might take Russell’s place at Mercedes, although British drivers have expressed a willingness to race alongside Verstappen. They’ve had their fair share of collisions in recent months, including a notable incident at the Spanish Grand Prix where Verstappen confronted Russell after an altercation.

“Honestly, I’m not concerned about my position because I don’t think I’m going anywhere, regardless of my teammates,” Russell added.

“Every team has two seats, and it’s normal for teams to ponder their future. I don’t really focus on that. There’s a lot of chatter and rumors directed at me, but from my perspective, it’s not that significant.”

Russell acknowledged that he had been approached by other teams, yet reiterated his loyalty since Mercedes is also his management, which complicates matters a bit.

Nonetheless, he is confident about his future being with Mercedes.

“The teams that reached out in the past were told, ‘I’m loyal to Mercedes, and that’s where I see my future.’ Ultimately, Mercedes is my management, so any discussions will have to happen through them first,” Russell explained. “There hasn’t been a lack of interest, but I’m concentrating on my commitment to Mercedes.”

“In the end, everything will work out, and I find it hard to believe I won’t be with Mercedes next year.”
