Senior Russian Navy officer Mikhail Gudkov is killed near Ukraine

Russian Naval Commander Killed in Combat

Russian military leaders confirmed on Thursday that Major General Mikhail Gudkov, the deputy commander of the Russian Navy, was killed during “combat operations” near Ukraine. He had recently taken on this role, having been appointed by President Vladimir Putin in March.

According to reports from state media, Gudkov lost his life during a combat operation in the Kursk region on July 2nd. Specific details surrounding his death remain unclear. Some military channels suggest he may have been struck by a Ukrainian missile, but this has not been officially verified.

At just 42 years old, Gudkov had previously commanded the naval infantry brigade of the 155th Fleet within the Russian Pacific Fleet. Reports indicate he also participated in military actions in regions like the North Caucasus and Syria. His oversight included coastal and marine forces, making him one of the highest-ranking officials to perish in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

Interestingly, Gudkov had been accused by Ukrainian authorities of war crimes, which included serious allegations like the execution of prisoners. As of now, there hasn’t been any statement from Ukrainian officials regarding his death.

This news arrives concurrently with the U.S. halting the delivery of certain weapons to Ukraine, including Patriot missile interceptors and 155 mm shells. This decision was reportedly influenced by concerns about U.S. ammunition stockpiles being critically low.
